I think I’m ready again…

Mostly because our Valentine’s Day was so stinking funny that I have to blog it.

It was a crazy day. I taught preschool this morning and 3 year-olds love sugary, crafty holidays that include the color red.

Think about it.

Red is the only color that transcends seasons. We have red in the fall, winter, spring and summer holidays. And why not? it’s bold, it’s passionate, it’s fun and it’s beautiful. I’m a fan.

Anyway, back to V-Day. After staying up the night before and prepping for the kids’ parties, preschool and taping fruit snacks to syd’s valentines, I felt fairly prepared for the day. We started early by attending the early morning reading party for our school’s read-a-thon. I, then, dashed off to preschool where I was met with 11 sugar-crazed students who were eager for their party and not much wanting to sit still. We managed to make it through our centers and then I had the task of helping them pass out their valentines. It is an arduous process that takes about an hour and requires a lot on hands and knees on my part and making sure they don’t dump all their valentines into the first cardholder they encounter.

I successfully shuttled off my preschoolers to their parents, not even bothering to explain the bouncing/giggling/crying, as well as the frosting smeared across their faces. I just smiled and shut the door.

One down… two to go.

Next up was Aj’s party. Playing bingo with 7 year-olds was a far simpler task. However, Aj had already eaten roughly half of his valentine candy out of his cardholder and was already on a downward spiral. Plus they had a substitute teacher ‘cause their teacher was sick. Oh, it was crazy (and loud) in there. I unhinged Aj’s valentines from his desk and told him I would gladly take them home with me so he didn’t have to carry the awkward thing.

I went straight from his party to syd’s kindergarten party. As I sat down in the chair to read to the kids, I realized it was the first time I had sat down all day… and I felt it. Every comma, ever period and semi-colon ended in a yawn. Poor kids. I’m usually a pretty good reader but I was running low on fuel.

Syd and I got home and Aj then proceeded to dump out his candy on the floor and sift through it. This was on top of the valentines that were scattered about due to he and Sydney wanting to look at all the extra valentines that were stacked neatly on the counter.

Syd and Gavin aren’t quite the sugar addicts that Aj is. Sydney settled with licking the huge Disneyland lollipop that Nana and Papa had given her. Gavin was happily consuming a packet of fun-dip while Aj tore through about 30 valentine’s worth of candy in about 5 minutes – the same amount of time it took to have a conversation with my grandmother.

well, you can imagine the fallout after the sugar buzz wore off. He cried for roughly an hour and a half, claiming this to be the worst valentine’s day ever because I hadn’t given him a card.

It was true… I didn’t get them a card, a present or anything. I figured they would get enough sweets and my boys do not need/want anything right now that is in the price range of what I find acceptable for valentine’s day. you can say that I opted out this year.

He also said he didn’t get enough hugs or loves… of course, it was while laying in my arms, curling his awkward body onto my lap and bawling so hard he got my clothes damp.

oh, I love that kid.

I force fed him some pizza (he wasn’t feeling great, imagine that) and then his blood sugar stabilized. I tucked him in and then settled in with my valentine and the present he gave me…

a new kindle fire.

happy.
